It is with sadness that we announce the death of Sr Marion Millane on 15 September 2026. She was 87 years old.
A member of the Holy Family Sisters, Sr Marion was inspired by the late Archbishop Dennis Hurley to leave her home in Ireland and come to South Africa to serve as a missionary. She dedicated 64 years of her life to service. Although she never lost her Irish accent, she came to regard South Africa as ‘my country’.
Sr Marion was one of the original team members at the Denis Hurley Centre, championing empowerment projects like ‘Sewing for Africa’, and education for children with special needs. She also worked with refugees.
Her order, the Holy Family Sisters, has a long history of service in education, health, pastoral and community work across Southern Africa. In 1875 they built a school in Glenmore, overlooking Durban. Today, the Holy Family College is an independent, co-educational Catholic High School providing a holistic education – ensuring students are not only academically proficient but also spiritually centered and emotionally resilient.
Rest in peace, dear Sr Marion – you touched the lives of countless people with your kindness, dignity and unwavering commitment to social justice and human compassion.
