My name is Sizwe Minenhle Bengu, and I am a young Deaf man currently pursuing my third year of studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. My journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, determination, and the life-changing impact of quality education and supportive mentors.
Raised by a single mother, I learned from an early age that challenges do not define a person’s future. My mother worked tirelessly to provide for our family and ensure that my education remained a priority. Her sacrifices, strength, and unwavering belief in me were the foundations upon which I built my dreams.
Kwa Thintwa School for the Deaf
In 2012, I started school at Kwa Thintwa School for the Deaf, which would become much more than a school to me. For twelve years, it was my second home – a place where I was nurtured, guided, challenged, and empowered.
My early inspiration was Teacher Rose, who played a significant role in building my confidence. She helped me recognize my potential and encouraged me to strive for success. Her support was a turning point in my life; it was when I first believed that I could achieve great things.
Over the years, teachers and staff taught me discipline, responsibility, resilience, and the importance of staying focused on my goals. They prepared me not only for academic success but also for life beyond the classroom.
During my school career, I earned more than 25 awards for both academics and sports. My matric year in 2023 was particularly special. The Grade 12 teachers went above and beyond their responsibilities to ensure that we succeeded. They were more than educators – they were mentors, guides, and parental figures whose dedication and encouragement helped me succeed.
Success comes from perseverance, hard work, and the courage to keep moving forward.
Today, as a university student, I carry the lessons and values I learned at Kwa Thintwa School for the Deaf with me every day. The school gave me the confidence to dream bigger, work harder, and believe that my Deafness would never limit my potential.
My story is proof that disability does not determine destiny. Success comes from perseverance, hard work, and the courage to keep moving forward. I hope my story inspires other Deaf learners and young people facing obstacles to believe in themselves and never give up on their dreams.
“Disability is not inability. With determination, support, and courage, every challenge can become a stepping stone to success.”
