World Refugee Day

Tues 20 June is designated by the UN as World Refugee Day.

Our Durban inner city is home to many who have fled war-stricken countries to the north. Many of these people have left comfortable homes and good jobs and arrive in our city with only the few possessions they could carry. Many are exhausted and traumatised after months spent fleeing the horrors of war. Instead of being embraced by community members they are often ostracised or even victimised. Finding a new job and earning sufficient money to rebuild their lives is a huge challenge.

From 10am-2pm the Durban Refugee Service Providers Network will host a World Refugee Day event at the Denis Hurley Centre. Open to all refugees and South Africans, this is a chance to to show solidarity in an enjoyable way.

The event will feature the Burundian Drummers, music by Congolese artist Rene Tshiakanyi, and at 11am a screening of the movie “Incorruptible”.

Discussions and an expo of work from members of the Refugee community will provide an opportunity to engage with people from across Africa who have had to flee their countries of origin.
