Thank you for bringing Christmas to people in the Valley of 1000 Hills

The Valley of 1000 Hills forms around the twisting path of the uMngeni River. It’s a beautiful but impoverished part of the Archdiocese of Durban, and was one of the first places where your Christmas food parcels and vouchers were distributed to families in dire situations.

In one broken down house we met 81-year-old James Mthembu (pictured above) who lives with his grandson, Sikelela (meaning Protector). Frail but possessed of great dignity, James shed tears of gratitude when he received your food voucher. He and Sikelele hadn’t had a proper meal in a long time, and he couldn’t say “thank you” enough.

We also met siblings Nompumelelo and Niphiwe. Their mother died when they were three years and one year old, and they were raised by their grandfather, Alpheus. At 86 years of age, Alpheus is now cared for by his two granddaughters. It was a privilege to deliver your food voucher to their humble home.

We wish we could tell you all the stories of those families who received your Christmas love and generosity. But we can tell you that the thankfulness of each one was overwhelming.

Thank you for bringing Christmas into their lives.
