Taking your caring to the place of care

Sukumawenza (meaning ‘the place of care’) Hospice at Inanda was one of the Archdiocese projects badly affected by the floods in July.

An investigation into what help might be needed revealed more than damaged infrastructure requiring repair. The running of the hospice itself was in need.

Since the previous time when Zulu Mission friends rallied round the Sisters to help them care for end of life patients, wear and tear had taken its toll.

The washing machine was no more, resulting in the heavy hand washing of bed linen and towels. Mattresses needed attention and new linen of all kinds was needed.

Cardinal Napier and Archbishop Jwara asked for your help – and you gave it so very generously.

This meant that on a day in September a cartage van drew up outside Sukumawenza, and the Sisters couldn’t believe what they saw as the doors opened!

A new industrial sized washing machine made its way from the van to the laundry where it was immediately installed. Mattress covers, new soft bedding, fresh towels and more were carried inside to replace what was threadbare and frequently mended.

The Sisters were overjoyed, and couldn’t say ‘thank you’ enough times.

Our visit to deliver your caring to ‘the place of care’ concluded with a tour of the wards where we were able to greet and chat with patients on your behalf. You couldn’t be with us in person, but you were more than present in spirit and your generosity in giving.
