School choirs present “A song for world peace”
On Wednesday 20 September five Durban Catholic Schools will participate in our annual senior choir concert at the Emmanuel Cathedral. They will present a special one-off early-evening concert of much-loved sacred, popular and choral music. The schools are Thomas Moore Kloof, St Benedicts Pinetown, St Francis Mariannhill, and Maris Stella Berea. The music will again be complemented by learners from KwaThintwa School for the Deaf, which was founded by Archbishop Hurley.
The programme culminates with all choirs joining in to sing en masse, the beautiful English folk song, ‘Oh Shenandoah’. Guest of honour this year will be Monsignor Paul Nadal.
In 2012, a group of Grade 11 girls from Maris Stella visited the projects at the Cathedral, and were so impressed by the work with refugees, homeless and unemployed people, as well as those with HIV/AIDS, that they decided to do something to help. So they approached other schools in the greater Durban area to join them in a concert of sacred music.
