Jubilee Year 2025
2025 is a special year in the Catholic Church. It’s a Jubilee year – a time when Catholics are invited to experience God’s mercy, forgiveness and healing in a deep, personal way. We commit to renewing our faith and living out the Gospel more fully.
‘Pilgrims of Hope’ is the theme for Jubilee Year 2025. What a wonderful message to bring to a world where so many people are suffering and in distress. Let us all be transformed into beacons of hope for the world … lifting ourselves and others above the conflict and natural disasters, so we may experience peace and happiness.
Fan the flame of hope
Pope Francis tells us: “We must fan the flame of hope that has been given us, and help everyone to gain new strength and certainty by looking to the future with an open spirit, a trusting heart and far-sighted vision.”
Some interesting history about Jubilee Years. They are based on Leviticus 25, which set aside a year of favour every 25 years. During this time, slaves were restored to freedom, debts were cancelled and property restored to its original owners. Today, the year begins with the symbolic opening of the Jubilee Doors of St Peter’s Basilica, which remain closed throughout the other 24 years.
On 5 January 2025, Archbishop Jwara lit and blessed the Jubilee Candle at the door of Emmanuel Cathedral. He then led the procession into the Cathedral to celebrate a special mass.
During the year, we celebrate many aspects of Christian life, most of which are close to the hearts of the Zulu Missions and our loyal supporters. Please join us in remembering and praying for these especially during the designated months:
- March 2025 – volunteers
- April 2025 – the sick and disabled, and those who care for them
- May 2025 – the elderly
- July 2025 – youth
- September 2025 – justice
- October 2025 – missions
- November 2025 – the poor
- December 2025 – prisoners
