Soup kitchen at Denis Hurley Centre

Volunteers needed at the Denis Hurley Centre soup kitchen

With the easing of lockdown restrictions, the feeding programme at the Denis Hurley Centre  is returning to normal.

We have been handing out food in containers so that people do not congregate at the DHC. But it has proved to be counter-productive, because people are now crowding the streets outside and disturbing our neighbours. Plus it has cost us an extra R1,200 per day for bio-degradable containers.

So we are back to serving in front of the building. People are eating in the open air; they can sit down comfortably instead of than crouching on the street; and they have access to ablution facilities. Everyone is sanitised when they come in and they are encouraged to space out – though they don’t always do so!

We are in need of more volunteers to help with serving, washing up and managing the crowd. Please come and join us on Tue, Wed, Thur, Sat and Sun between 11am and 1pm. Safe parking is behind the Cathedral (just tell the security guard you are coming to volunteer with the DHC).

If you are coming on your own just turn up; if you want to come as a group please email Sr Cathy cathy@denishurleycentre.org

We also continue to prepare food for distribution at other sites and are most grateful for donations of food and ingredients.
