A window to Matikwe Mission

Matikwe Mission was founded in 1925 by Missionaries from France and still serves a sprawling community in the parish of St Joseph.

A convent was later built in 1967 where the  Sisters of the Daughters of Charity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus still live and work. The Mission also opened the first clinic to bring primary health care to the community.

This clinic still operates, along with the Sukumawenza Hospice for the care of end of life patients. The meaning of the name Sukumawenza is ‘stand up and do it’.

Perhaps aligned to the life of St Joseph himself as a worker, Matikwe also hosts a vibrant community based project and registered NGO, named ‘The Lake of Salvation in Christ’. The project is aimed at skills development such as sewing, handcraft, weaving and beadwork, and includes a group of disabled people who make and sell their products to earn a small living.

Founded 97 years ago, Matikwe Mission continues to serve all who live there with love and compassion – blessed by the generosity of Mission friends.
