A Visit to St Anne’s Mission at Mpophomeni

The location of St Anne’s Mission was a result of the Apartheid system’s Group Areas Act.

People were removed from their homes in Howick and Zenzele and placed in a new township 15 kilometres away.

Father Isidore Freoux, who was parish priest at Howick had seen the plans for the new township, and was able to select the perfect site for the mission church.

St Anne’s has been served since those early days by priests from the Redemptorist, Pallotine and Servite priests, as well as the servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Sisters, as well as later by the Dominican Sisters of Montebello.

Today, as well as being parish priest to the settlement of Mpophomeni, Father Xolani also has four outstation communities who depend on him for mass and the sacraments.
